Pipeline Coatings
- FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy)Excellent chemical adhesion and cathodic disbondment resistance. Susceptible to impact damage during handling and requires careful field joint tie-in. Read the deep dive on FBE failure modes.

- Coal Tar / Asphalt (Legacy)Still present on operating systems. Requires specific recoating strategies to avoid compatibility failures.
Field Joint Coatings
- Heat Shrink SleevesHigh integrity when the surface is properly prepared and the sleeve is heated to the correct temperature profile. Among the most misapplied systems in field construction.
- Liquid Applied (Plural Component)High performance, direct bond to the girth weld area. Requires equipment calibration and applicator experience with plural component systems.
- Cold Applied TapeAppropriate for specific low-stress, constrained environments. Not a substitute for properly applied thermal systems.
Field Joint Compatibility Is Decided at the Design Desk, Not on the Pipe
The mainline coating is selected, the pipe is ordered, and then someone asks what to do at the girth weld. Field joint selection happens last and is treated as a procurement decision rather than an engineering one. In practice, the field joint is the weakest link in every pipeline coating system — it is applied by hand in variable field conditions to a thermally active zone. Selecting it last and specifying it loosely is the most common cause of field-joint-initiated corrosion failures.
Spec Compliance Is Not the Same as Integrity
A data sheet says a coating will perform for 20 years. If it is applied in high humidity over a marginally prepared surface, it may fail in three — and all required test results will have been "passing." We bridge the gap between manufacturer claims and what actually holds up in the ground.
